Bobby Lucas is a composer, performer, and educator based out of Columbus, Ohio. Originally from Pittsburgh, he graduated from Mercyhurst University in Erie, PA with a Music Education degree and an emphasis on trombone, piano, and composition. There he studied with Dr. Albert Glinsky. His piece Five Sketches of Home was premiered by the Mercyhurst Wind Ensemble. While in Erie he played regularly with a jazz combo, The Monk’s Brew, of which he is a founding member.

After graduation, he attended Ohio University for a Master’s in Music Composition where he studied under Dr. Mark Phillips. He held the position of Theory TA and Jazz TA while playing in multiple ensembles, including the Wind Symphony, top Jazz Ensemble, and the top Jazz Combo. Lucas would have numerous compositions performed and premiered while at OU, with groups ranging from trombone choirs to the Wind Symphony.

Since graduating, Lucas has lived, taught, and performed in the Columbus area with multiple groups. His piece, It’s Easier for Me to Imagine Him as a Knight was premiered by the OU wind symphony during the Ampersand Festival. In the same year, a piece he co-wrote, orchestrated, and recorded with the OU Wind Symphony, A Public Conveyance, was eligible to be nominated for a Grammy. He has performed at multiple jazz festivals, including the Columbus Jazz and Ribs festival, the Erie Jazz Festival, and the Penn Stare Arts Festival.

Bobby looks forward to bringing his love of music, learning, performing, and life to all of his students, regardless of age or skill level in a positive yet challenging atmosphere.
