The Musicologie Story
Hi – I’m Kay and I started Musicologie with my husband Joseph in 2014. We’ve been touring musicians (one of our songs just hit a million plays) and music educators for years. We opened Musicologie with a simple idea: Everyone is a musician. Play, sing, make beats, write songs, whatever kind of music making it is, it’s good for your mind, your body and your soul at every age. It’s part of what makes us human.
There is a huge and growing segment of parents who see music programs being eliminated from their kids’ schools and are looking for a replacement. But it’s a big challenge to create the experience those parents want and are willing to pay for. Private teachers are notoriously difficult to recruit and train, many having no experience working with kids. Maintaining a consistent, excellent standard of service is tough. Without consistency, the minority of customers who do have a good experience tend to be loyal to an individual teacher rather than the brand. These are classic challenges that every studio owner faces.
Our mission is to help music teachers, performers and entrepreneurs break through those challenges, build something big and impact their community in a really meaningful way. We’ve developed a replicable system for delivering simply delightful music lessons that’s been proven across six locations in three different markets. We’ve spent years of trial (and some error!) developing our systems, pricing, policies, branding, curriculum and most importantly, our culture. The business we’ve developed works, and it can work for you.
I’m so excited to share what we’re doing with you. Let’s get started.
Cheers,

Kay Barker
Founder
Musicologie

Music is magical. It’s emotional. It’s fun. It makes us feel things and see possibilities. It expresses love and hope and sadness and fear and wonder. Every culture ever known can be identified by the music played by its people. Music helps us learn. It improves coordination, language, reading and math skills. It nurtures our emotional and cognitive health. Studying an instrument makes our brains bigger and reduces chances of hearing loss and dementia. And get this – it’s not merely that music provides these benefits; research shows learning music is the best way to get them. Because of all this, music lessons are one of the most important and impactful investments anyone can make in themselves or in their children. That’s why. Because music makes us human.

To create an inclusive community of musical explorers and empower teachers to build sustainable careers.
Our mission is everything to us. It defines who we are, why we exist and where we’re going next. We want to grow our community while doing right by those around us.

We act with integrity and tell the truth; we build trust through our words and actions.
We laugh and have a good time and leave other people’s days better than we found them.
We make music lessons fun! We are friendly, encouraging, patient and sometimes a little weird.
We communicate reliably and respectfully. Our words have the power to educate, inform and inspire.
We innovate and take risks, share openly and collaborate on forward thinking solutions. We create, and so we thrive.
We are curious and empathetic listeners willing and able to adapt our teaching methods to deliver an amazing learning experience.
