Starting music lessons can feel like a big decision, and you probably have questions. What’s it like? What if I don’t know what I want to learn? How do I get started? Don’t worry—I’ve got you. Below, I’ll walk you through some of the most common questions I hear from new students and parents.
What is the Musicologie Method® and why does it matter?
The Musicologie Method® is the foundation of everything we do. It’s built on two things: a safe environment and student-centered learning. That means we meet you exactly where you are. Whether you’re four or forty, total beginner or picking up where you left off years ago, your lesson will be customized around your goals, your pace, and your musical interests. We create a space where it’s okay to make mistakes, try new things, and feel excited about learning. Our goal is to inspire—not to push you into a one-size-fits-all curriculum.
What happens at my first lesson?
We call it an assessment lesson, but it’s not a test—promise! It’s a relaxed, 30-minute first meeting with a teacher we’ve carefully matched to your goals and experience level. You’ll talk about what you want to learn, try out some music together, and figure out what program is the best fit. If you’re signing up your child, this is also when we’ll help decide between private lessons, Musicologie Junior (for ages 0-5), or even our Accelerated Piano Lab or RockStars programs for older kids. If you’re not quite sure what you’re looking for, that’s totally okay—we’ll help you figure it out.
Do I need an instrument before I start?
Not at all. For your first visit, you can use one of ours. After that, if you decide to continue, you’ll need something at home to practice on—but we’ll help you figure out the best option based on your goals and budget. We can recommend brands, connect you with local shops, or help you find something online. If you’re not ready to commit to buying just yet, some families start with a rental or used instrument while they ease in.
How quickly will I or my child start making progress?
Faster than you might think. Our programs are designed to get you playing or singing right away. You won’t be stuck playing scales for months—we’ll get you into real music fast. For kids, we incorporate trusted curricula like Faber and Alfred’s, while making sure every lesson feels fun and personal. For adults, lessons are tailored to your pace and preferences—whether you’re learning classical piano or just want to strum your favorite songs around a campfire. Progress looks different for everyone, but with consistent lessons and a little practice, you’ll be amazed at what’s possible.
